12News breaks down statistics of Beaumont officer-involved shootings within past few years

The Texas Attorney General's website allows everyone to search for filed reports related to shootings involving police officers.

BEAUMONT, Texas — After the recent officer-involved shooting in Beaumont on Saturday, August 24, that left one man dead, 12News dug into the data showing how many of these shootings have happened in the city within the last few years.

The most recent officer-involved shooting is the third to happen in Beaumont in 2024 and the second in Southeast Texas this year.

Here are some of the things that 12News discovered during our search.

As of now, the Texas Attorney General's website has a total of 11 officer-involved shootings in Beaumont since 2016 listed. Out of the 11, nine of them involved Beaumont police officers. One involved the Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy and another, the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Here is what we learned about the victims of these shootings, according to the Attorney General's website.

Five of the victims have been white, four were Black, and two were Hispanic. Two of the victims were injured, but not killed. Only one of the victims was a woman.

Among these shootings, 16 of the officers involved were white, two were African American and one was Hispanic.

The most recent officer-involved shooting happened on August 24 on Harriot Street in Beaumont. Police responded to an disturbance call at a home on the street. While officers were at the home talking to a person involved in the disturbance, a man approached them from behind a house "armed with a chainsaw" and advanced toward them, according to police.

The officers fired their weapons at the man, identified as Manuel Arteaga, 42, who was pronounced dead at the scene by Beaumont EMS paramedics.

Another 2024 officer-involved shooting happened on July 15 in Beaumont's Old Town neighborhood. Two officers were sent to the 2300 block of Ashley in reference to a welfare check involving a possible suicidal individual at around noon, according to a press release from the Beaumont Police Department.

When officers arrived they found 68-year-old Charles Carrol who was in the street holding a gun. Officers then shot and fatally injured the man, it is still not known what lead to them opening fire.

In February 2024, Beaumont officers were called to a residence in the 3800 block of North Major at about 7:05 a.m. due to a reported aggravated family violence assault with a gun, according to a news release from police.

When officers got there, they saw the suspect drive away and crash in a ditch. When the man got out of the truck, he "engaged" officers with a gun and was fatally shot.
