BEAUMONT, Texas — Beaumont Police are investigating after a man was killed by police after leading them on a brief chase and then getting out of a pickup with a gun Sunday morning in Beaumont.
Officers were called to a residence in the 3800 block of North Major at about 7:05 a.m. Sunday morning due to a reported aggravated family violence assault with a gun according to a news release from police.
"Individual leaving had already assaulted a female and had a gun with him," said BPD Chief Jimmy Singletary.
When officers got there they saw the male suspect speeding away in a silver GMC Sierra pickup.
Following a brief chase, the truck crashed into a ditch on the frontage road near the RFD Rd underpass on the north side of U.S. Highway 69.
"Truck crashed out in a ditch under the lnva canal overpass," Singletary said.
When the man got out of the truck, he "engaged" officers with a gun and was fatally shot. No officers were injured.
"Several seconds he got out of the truck, and was moving away from the truck and pointing a gun at our officers. And our officers shot," said Singletary.
"And he had a handgun and that's the basic information that our officers had as they responded to the call," said Singletary.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene by a Jefferson County justice of the peace.
Singletary says the officers are on paid administrative leave while the Jefferson County's office and BPD's internal affairs unit investigate.
"Both of these young men are good young men. Their good human beings. Their good family members, and they're hurting right now," Singletary told 12News.
BPD is offering the officers therapy.
Singletary is thanking the 911 dispatchers for noting that Coleman was armed.
"Our officers handled the call differently. And we're so glad that our dispatchers did get the information to our officers," he said.
Police have not released any other information at this time.
This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
