BEAUMONT, Texas — The identity of the man fatally shot by Beaumont Police officers, after they say came at them with a chainsaw, has been released.
Manuel Arteaga, 42, was fatally shot by officers after police say he approached them with a chainsaw.
Police have arrested Raul Arteaga Jr., 24, of Beaumont, who they say was the suspect in the original disturbance call to which officers responded.
He was arrested on one count of aggravated assault family violence, and one count of aggravated assault, according to police.
The shooting happened Saturday night at after officers were sent to a disturbance call at a home in the 1800 block of Harriot St. at 8:20 p.m., according to a news release from Beaumont Police.
While officers were at the home talking to a person involved in the disturbance, a man approached them from behind a home "armed with a chainsaw" and advanced toward them, police say.
The officers fired their weapons at the man who pronounced dead at the scene by Beaumont EMS paramedics.
According to an update, officers were taking Raul into custody and Manuel reportedly charged at the officers and Raul with a chainsaw, which prompted them to discharge their firearms.
Neither officer was injured in the incident, according to police.
The shooting is being investigated by the Texas Rangers as well as investigators with the Jefferson County District Attorney's office, Beaumont Police Department detectives and internal affairs investigators.
"The Beaumont Police Department remains committed to transparency and accountability and will ensure a thorough investigation is conducted," according to the news release.
In accordance with standard procedure, both officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
