Police say pregnant mom's boyfriend fired shots that hit her, their 1-year-old son

During the altercation police say Madrid used an "AK style rifle" and fired shots which struck his pregnant girlfriend and their son.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Beaumont Police have arrested a man they say shot his 1-year-old son and his pregnant girlfriend during a home invasion Thursday afternoon in the west end of Beaumont.

Anthony Madrid, 26, was inside a home in the 8700 block of Newfield Lane when multiple people entered the house as part of an "on-going feud involving narcotics and illegal activity" according to a release from the Beaumont Police Department.

During the altercation police say Madrid used an "AK style rifle" and fired shots which struck his 24-year-old pregnant girlfriend and their 1-year-old son the release said.

Detectives with the Beaumont Police Department have been working with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and the DEA to investigate the release said.

After the suspects fled Madrid called 911 and then drove his girlfriend and child to a Beaumont hospital according to the release.

Madrid gave conflicting statements to police about the shooting and his lengthy criminal history leading detectives to suspect the home invasion stemmed from some type of narcotics or other illegal activity.

He is currently out on bond after being charged in last month in Harris County after being found to be in possession of a kilo of cocaine police said.

Madrid has also served numerous state jail sentences for drug possession and is currently on parole.

Detectives found numerous pieces of evidence on the scene which they say indicated that narcotics were being distributed out of the Newfield Lane home.

A search of the home turned up two cases of promethazine, about 1.5 kilos of cocaine, a large amount of cash and four guns, two of which were stolen.

Federal agents with the BATF worked with teh U.S. Attorney's Office and have charged Madrid with "use of a firearm in a drug dealing act and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute."

Hours after the shooting Madrid was arrested on the federal charges and taken to the Lasalle Corrections Facility in downtown Beaumont.

Police say additional state charges are expected to be filed against him.

Madrid's girlfriend and his 1-year-old son are in stable condition according to police.

The child was flown by helicopter to a Houston hospital on Thursday.
