Police: Pregnant woman, 1-year-old shot in narcotics-related home invasion in west Beaumont

Police believe that the woman and her child were caught in the crossfire between the boy's father and the suspects.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A pregnant mom and her 1-year-old son were shot at a west end Beaumont home Thursday afternoon during what police describe as a home invasion.

Beaumont Police responded to the shooting in the 8700 block of Newfield Lane in the Amelia neighborhood just west of Major Drive at about 1:50 p.m. according to a news release from the Beaumont Police Department.

Police say they believe that the woman and her child were caught in the crossfire between the boy's father, who is the boyfriend of the woman, and the suspects the release said.

As officers rushed to the scene they were notified that the person who had reported the shooting to 911 was now taking the child and his 24-year-old mother, who is eight months pregnant, to the hospital according to the release.

Police say the young boy was transferred by helicopter to a Houston hospital and that he and his mother are both in stable condition.

Detectives investigating the shooting uncovered evidence of "ongoing criminal activity inside the residence" and police believe "possible narcotics activity" led to the home invasion and shooting.

Police at the scene said the shooting was not a random act and that they believe the suspects were "acquainted with" someone at the home.

The shooting caused students at Amelia Elementary School less than half a mile from the scene to be put on "lock out" for a short time according to the Beaumont Independent School District.

Students at nearby Vincent Middle School and West Brook High School were also put on "lock out."

No arrests have been and police have not yet released a description of the suspects as they continue to investigate.
