New trial date set for ex-wife of Port Arthur Police officer accused of conspiring to kill him

Her 12-year prison sentence was set aside after a motion was filed alleging ineffective assistance by her former council.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A new trial date has been set for a Southeast Texas woman convicted in late March of conspiring to have her ex-husband, a Port Arthur Police officer, killed.

Kelly Sue Daws, 47, was found guilty of conspiracy in the Dec. 22, 2016 aggravated assault of her ex-husband. Her 12-year prison sentence was set aside April 26 after a motion was filed alleging ineffective assistance by her former counsel.

Her second trial is now set for June 7.

Daws had an appeal pending with the Ninth District of Texas Court of Appeals.  An appeals court judge Tuesday dismissed her appeal as a result of the lower court granting a new trial.
