DEWEYVILLE, Texas — The Newton County Sheriff's Office has officially ruled that the death of a woman found in her driveway in August 2024 was an accident after previously investigating as possible murder.
Cierra Westbrook's cause of death has been ruled as an accidental drug overdose, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
At around 5 p.m. on August, 23 Newton County deputies drove out to a home at 910 County Road 4203 in Deweyville, Texas for a welfare check, according to Sheriff Robert Burby.
After arriving at the home, deputies reportedly saw an Westbrook lying in the driveway and she was later pronounced dead after EMS arrived.
At the scene it was not clear what caused Westbrook's wounds and injuries to her body. The sheriff's office released that Westbrook was not struck by a vehicle.
Deputies conducted interviews, talked to people who saw Westbrook in the hours prior to her being found. They spoke with witnesses, family members and others who had information to provide about Westbrook.
"A post was later made on Facebook from other sources that stated Westbrook received blunt force trauma. This sends out a false narrative and severely distorts an investigation as well as causes additional stress on family members. It also hinders us in determining what occurred or who may be responsible," The sheriff's office said in the release.
