NEDERLAND, Texas — Nederland residents may see more police officers in the area of Doornbos Park after two violent crimes there in the last few weeks.
Over the weekend, Nederland man Kenneth Young said he was attacked by two suspects while walking his dog at Doornbos Park.
Earlier in November, two teens were shot at the park.
No arrests have been made in either case.
People at the park on Monday told 12News they won't stop going there, but will be more cautious.
Mason Rodgers and his kids enjoy coming to the park to play and feed the ducks, but he says the crime in the last few weeks has him on edge.
"They've been wanting to come out here and you want to bring them out here," Rodgers said. "But then again you don't, because you don't know what you are going to walk in to."
Rodgers says he sees police officers up and down Nederland Avenue but would like to see more patrolling the park.
"There are cops up and down Nederland Avenue patrolling the speeders. Maybe they could have some stay at the park at least until the suspect are apprehended," Rodgers said.
Nederland Assistant Police Chief Andy Arnold told 12News the department is amping up security at Doornbos Park following the two violent crimes.
"There were two different events, but we do not think the two are related," Arnold said.
He said locals will see more officers in the area of Doornbos.
"We have increased our police presence in the park, both before and after it shuts down," Arnold said.
Arnold hopes the extra security will deter crime.
"Doornbos Park is one of the safest parks in the area and we want to keep it that way," Arnold said.
Rodgers just hopes his kids can continue to safely enjoy playing there.
"People gotta feel safe whenever they are coming out here or they are not going to come," Rodgers said. "Then there wont be a park for kids to come to."
