LUMBERTON, Texas — An 11-year-old from Brookeland got some special support from a loving community on Saturday to help get him the healthcare he needs.
Zack Everett was diagnosed with Chiari malformation when he was 7, and the doctor he needs to see is in New York.
The sixth grader's condition causes brain tissue to extend into his spinal canal.
His family told 12News the doctor he'll see is a specialist in treatment of Chiari malformation.
The Lumberton community came together to hold a link sale on Saturday to raise the funds to help get him to New York.
Kayla Brister, Everett's stepmother, told 12News he'll have MRIs done during the visit, and will have a follow up appointment about the problems he's had recently due to the condition. Brister said he underwent surgery two years ago.
"He's been having difficulty with pain in his arms and legs and neck, not sleeping at night and having learning difficulties so we're needing to go back and get more help," Brister said.
Brister said they received lots of help to put the fundraiser together.
The family plans to go to New York on November 10.
