No bonfire, no problem! | Lamar University kicks off Homecoming amid Jefferson County burn ban

While the wooden pallets stayed stacked, the LU cheerleaders and dance team took the lead as students made their way to the annual homecoming pep rally.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Spirits were high at Lamar University's Homecoming pep rally Thursday evening, despite the bonfire being called off due to Jefferson County's burn ban.

That didn't stop students from kicking their homecoming festivities into high gear! The student and faculty's excitement proved the fire was always burning!

While the wooden pallets stayed stacked, the Lamar University cheerleaders and dance team took the lead as students across campus made their way to the annual Homecoming pep rally.

"I've loved the bonfire each year, but I understand why we aren't doing it," said LU dance team captain Kendall Farrow. "We get to do what we love and just dance in front of our community!"

"I'm a little upset that there's no fire tonight, but I'm still really excited to be together with everybody," said LU cheer team co-captain Sally Crosby.

Crosby is ready to get fans and alumni fired up, the Big Red way.

"My favorite part is the alumni because they get to come to the game with us, cheer with us, we get to stunt with them, it's my favorite part," she said.

As the students walked in, the cardinal spirit was alive, from the student body to faculty, including President Dr. Jaime Taylor.

"That might be the first time I've ever danced in my life! My wife has never seen me move or anything," said Dr. Taylor.

Dr. Taylor says the Homecoming pep rally allows students to let loose, build camaraderie, and eat great food on the road to graduation.

"Most of the activity happens outside the classroom, and this builds camaraderie. Building this kind of camaraderie really keeps them in school," he told 12News.

Students like senior Jonah Smith, love the atmosphere that the pep rally brings.

"I'm always looking for a good time at Lamar, so that's why I'm here," Smith said.

Smith is confident the cardinals, will come out on top against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks.

"We're gonna destroy them! What else can I say?" said Smith.

Make sure to come out and support the Lamar Cardinals as they take on the lumberjacks. Kickoff starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
