BEAUMONT, Texas — The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is warning people about a scam that is going around Jefferson County recently.

The scam involves a male caller with a 409 area code, falsely identifying himself as a Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy.

The scammer claims that they have a confidential legal matter to discuss with you. They then tell you that you owe some type of fine and a warrant will be issued for your arrest if you do not pay it.

Scammers usually instruct the victim to purchase a cash card and take care of the fine by phone. Once you purchase these cards and give the scammer your information, they now have your money and you won't see it again.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is reminding people to never go to the store and purchase a cash card to pay someone over the phone.

No law enforcement agency will try to solicit funds over the phone for any reason. These phone numbers appear to be coming from the 409 area code however, spoof apps can make a call appear from anywhere.

Never give anyone who calls you your personal nor financial information.
