Beaumont city leaders discuss $1.9 million study to look into drainage options after heavy rain causes flooding, frustration

"Getting awfully hard and old to tell the citizens 'I'll try, I'll try, I'll try.' Man, we've got to figure this out, this is just getting plain ridiculous."

BEAUMONT, Texas — After a storm last week dumped as much as 6 inches of water and sections of Beaumont were underwater, council members are seeking solutions.

"One of the things that a lot of citizens have noticed is if you look on the Eastex and I-10 feeder roads, the restaurants and car lots, those have gotten to be where they flood pretty easily, pretty fast as well," councilman Mike Getz said.

Getz says city engineers need to work with TxDOT to handle the drainage along the highways.

Some neighborhood streets also have problems.

"Getting awfully hard and old to tell the citizens 'I'll try, I'll try, I'll try.' Man, we've got to figure this out, this is just getting plain ridiculous," councilman Taylor Nield said.

During Tuesday's workshop, Nield voiced his frustration.

Leaders talked about a $1.9 million study, which Getz says contains more than $250 million in proposed projects.

"Which ones we can tackle, which ones we can afford, and which ones we can seek federal funding to assist us with," Getz said.

Other council members joined Getz and encouraged improving the relationship with Drainage District 6.

"It doesn't do us any good to have ours cleaned out, water flow, only to come up to a DD6 ditch that can't move the water," Getz said.

One option would be to divert more of the flood water from ditches and send it directly into the Neches River.

If any Beaumont resident does flood concerns at a home or business, the city wants to hear from you.

During Tuesday's workshop, city manager Kyle Hayes offered up a phone number for people to call, 409-880-3725.
