Silsbee Elementary, Laura Reeves Primary campuses briefly locked down after shooting in nearby neighborhood

Silsbee ISD reported that the suspect was apprehended and that campuses are safe.

Silsbee Elementary and Laura Reeves Primary campuses were placed on lockout at approximately 12:45 p.m. due to a shooting that occurred near 8th St. in Silsbee.

Police reported to the 400 block of south 8th street in Silsbee at approximately 11:33 a.m. due to a report that a man had been shot. 

Police say the victim, a 25 year old male of Silsbee, was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont by Crossroads.

"Crossroads EMS responded quickly, and lifesaving measures were performed at the scene," authorities said.

Through a combined effort of the Silsbee Police Department and other law enforcement, officials were able to locate the suspect.

"At approximately 1:00 p.m., with the assistance of Hardin County Deputies, the suspect, a 44-year-old male from Silsbee, was taken into custody by Silsbee Police, without incident, within the 800 block of Boll Street," Silsbee police said.

Nearby Silsbee ISD campuses, Silsbee Elementary and Laura Reeves Primary were placed under a brief lockdown as a precaution. 

"School resource officers are located at both campuses to ensure the safety of all," the school district posted on its Facebook page. 

The 44-year-old suspect, James Michael Bartlett Jr., was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by felon. Bartlett's bond is set at $500,000 for the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge. Additionally, his bond of $100,000 is set for the charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by felon. 

Police say Barlett will be transported and held at the Hardin County Jail.

12:45 pm. – Silsbee ISD has learned from Silsbee Police Department of a shooting that occurred near 8th Street in Silsbee. According to police, the suspect has not been apprehended. As a precaution to our students and staff, Silsbee Elementary and Laura Reeves Primary campuses have been placed on lockout. School resource officers are located at both campuses to ensure the safety of all.

On Friday, October 25, 2019, at approximately 11:33 AM, Silsbee Police responded to the 400 block of South 8th Street in Silsbee in reference to the report that a man had been shot. Crossroads EMS responded quickly and lifesaving measures were performed at the scene. The victim, a 25 year old male, of Silsbee, was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont by Crossroads EMS. Investigating officers were quickly made aware of whom the assailant was believed to be. 

Through a combined effort of the Silsbee Police Department, the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and A.T.F. (The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives), law enforcement was able to obtain a possible location of the suspect. At approximately 1:00 PM, with the assistance of Hardin County Deputies, the suspect, a 44 year old male from Silsbee, was taken into custody by Silsbee Police, without incident, within the 800 block of Boll Street. 

As a precaution, Silsbee Elementary and Laura Reeves Primary campuses were placed under a temporary lockout to ensure the safety of the children. As always, we commend the Silsbee Independent School District staff and administration for quick and protective action. 

The suspect, James Michael Bartlett Jr. (44) of Silsbee, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Felon. He was arraigned by Hardin County Justice of the Peace Chris Ingram. Ingram set a bond of $500,000 for the charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and a bond of $100,000 for the charge of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Felon. Bartlett will be transported and held at the Hardin County Jail.
