PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A Port Arthur man has been indicted for murder after allegedly shooting and killing 18-year-old Jesus Garcia at Beverly Place Apartments.
19-year-old Vonzelle Hall has been indicted for murder after being identified to Groves police by his mother.
According to the probable cause affidavit, officers from Groves Police Department responded to Beverly Place Apartments, located at 5307 Gulfway Drive, Groves, Jefferson County, Texas in reference to a shooting back on August 10.
There they found Garcia lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Garcia was immediately placed in an ambulance and rushed to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Officers reportedly combed through surveillance video that they obtained from a nearby apartment and were able to find footage of the incident.
The probable cause affidavit says that in the video investigators were able to see "several males standing in the parking lot with at least three of the subjects holding what appear to be firearms".
"One of the subjects holding a gun, a black male wearing a camouflaged hoodie and cap on his head, is standing next to Garcia, who is also armed with a firearm," the affidavit read.
The man in the camouflage hoodie and Garcia reportedly looked like friends based on their demeanors, with no evidence of an argument between the two.
According to the probable cause affidavit the then drew Garcia's attention away and then suddenly puts a gun to Garcia's head.
Garcia reportedly ducks away from the gun and attempts to flee, but the man in camouflage opened fire as he tried to run away.
Garcia was then seen on the video collapsing in the parking lot just a short distance away as the rest of the men fled.
After seeing this video, Groves police took screenshots of the shooter and posted them to social media asking for any information to help identify him.
Shortly after, Groves police received a call from a man who wished to remain anonymous. He believed that the image of the shooter looked like Vonzelle Hall, but were not conclusive enough to charge Hall.
Finally on August 13, Danielle Chratain reportedly called the police and told them that Hall was her son, and that she was certain that he was the person posted on social media as the shooter.
