BEAUMONT, Texas — Judge John Stevens has declared a mistrial has been called for a man accused of aggravated sexual assault.
The defendant, Raymond Reginald Peoples, 35, of Beaumont represented himself in the trial.
The jury could not come to a unanimous decision, resulting in a hung jury.
Peoples is being tried for aggravated sexual assault, but this will only be the first felony charge in a litany of allegations brought against him.
In total, Peoples is facing four felony charges which include, two separate instances of aggravated sexual assault (one of which he was indicted in 2019), one count of aggravated assault of a police officer, and possession of implements of escape in a correctional facility.
The state will move forward with the non-related charge of aggravated assault of a police officer next. Peoples will act as his own attorney in this case as well.
The state will decide what to do next about the other charges.
The aggravated sexual assault charges come from two different women on two different dates, and the other charges will reportedly be tried on a later date.
