Beaumont man accused of aggravated sexual assault trial set to begin Tuesday

Peoples is being tried for aggravated sexual assault tomorrow, but this will only be the first felony charge in a litany of allegations brought against him.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Jury selection for the trial of Raymond Reginald Peoples, 35, of Beaumont began Monday afternoon.

Peoples is being tried for aggravated sexual assault tomorrow, but this will only be the first felony charge in a litany of allegations brought against him.

In total Peoples is facing four felony charges which include, two separate instances of aggravated sexual assault (one of which he was indicted on in 2019), one count of aggravated assault of a police officer, and possession of implements of escape in a correctional facility.

The aggravated sexual assault charges come from two different women on two different dates, and the other charges will reportedly be tried on a later date.

The trial will be presided over by The Honorable John Stevens and the prosecutor will be Mike Laird.

In a surprising twist, Peoples has decided that he will be representing himself as his own defense attorney.

If convicted, Peoples faces 5-99 years or life in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
