Beaumont man charged with federal violations after robbing USPS employee at knifepoint, stealing mail truck

Jody Lee Bass, 34, was charged with carjacking and assault on a federal officer.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A Beaumont man has been charged with federal violations in connection with a June 8 postal carjacking. 

Jody Lee Bass, 34, was charged with carjacking and assault on a federal officer after appearing in court on June 12.

Bass approached a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service on Avenue F and Joachimi St. 

He is alleged to have used a knife to rob the mail carrier of the USPS mail delivery truck while the victim was delivering mail, according to a release. 

Information presented in court stated that Bass grabbed the postal worker and attempted to stab him. The mail carrier was able to get away and Bass drove off with the mail truck.

Beaumont Police responded to a robbery call on June 8 around 7:25 p.m. near the intersection of Ave F and Joachimi St.

Police say that he abandoned the truck and attempted to run away on foot, but was caught by a Beaumont Police K-9 unit.

Bass was taken into custody where he was questioned by detectives. 

If convicted of both charges, Bass faces up to 35 years in federal prison.

The Justice Department established the formation of carjacking task forces in 11 targeted districts across the United States, including the Eastern District of Texas, according to U.S. Attorney Damien.
