Beaumont man indicted for hindering apprehension, taking weapon from an officer

Johnson, 27, took an officer's Taser by force and threw it over the third story balcony of an apartment.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A Beaumont man has been indicted for hindering apprehension and taking a weapon from an officer.

Derrick Antonio Johnson, 27, of Beaumont, forcefully took an officer's Taser and threw it over the third story balcony of an apartment.

On May 29 just after 3 a.m., Beaumont police went to the 5700 block of Northwest Parkway after receiving a request to have police presence at the residence.

When police got there, an argument was taking place between Johnson and former Groves Councilman Cross Coburn,25.

A responding officer attempted to detain Johnson, but former Councilman Coburn pushed the officer, causing him to hit his head, according to a probable cause affidavit.

In response, the officer used his Taser to incapacitate Coburn while attempting to arrest him.

"Johnson took the officer's TASER from him using force and threw it over the third story balcony of the apartment," according to a statement from the probable cause affidavit.

Johnson was detained and transported to the police station to provide a statement to Beaumont detectives.

After the investigation, it was discovered that Johnson, "with intent to hinder the arrest or prosecution, aided in providing the other with any means of avoiding arrest or effecting escape and intentionally or knowingly and with force took from a peace officer his stun gun (TASER)," according to the probable cause affidavit.

Johnson was arrested for hindering apprehension and taking a weapon from a peace officer.

He was transported to the Jefferson County jail for processing.

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
