BEAUMONT, Texas — Former Groves city councilmember Cross Coburn, 25, was indicted for assaulting a peace officer Wednesday afternoon.
According to the affidavit, Beaumont police confronted Coburn at his apartment in the 5700 block of Northwest Parkway after receiving a call from an officer saying Coburn had assaulted him and then went back into his apartment.
Officer Jones reportedly arrived at the apartments to assist the injured Officer Greeson, and after a lengthy wait, placed Coburn under arrest after he came out of his apartment.
There, Officer Jones said he saw surveillance footage showing Coburn assaulting Officer Greeson. The following details are from Officer Jones' description of the footage.
Coburn reportedly intervened and shoved Officer Greeson to the ground as he was trying to place another person in wrist restraints.
Jones said in the video he saw Officer Greeson's head hit the wall as he fell and then saw Coburn get on to of him.
After a struggle, Officer Greeson tried to arrest Coburn and told him to get on the ground which Coburn ignored.
This lead to Officer Greeson using his taser on Coburn, but it did little to pacify him as he once again got into a grappling match with Officer Greeson, this time putting him into a headlock.
According to the affidavit, Coburn then fled back into his apartment locking the door behind him to prevent officers from arresting him.
The affidavit says that due to Coburn assaulting Officer Greeson who was wearing his City of Beaumont issued police uniform with badge Insignia while conducting his lawful official duties and escaping while under arrest, he was charged with a felony.
