PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Port Arthur Mayor Thurmond Bartie is calling for a voluntary evacuation of Sabine Pass and Pleasure Island in preparation for Beryl.
Mayor Bartie issued the statement in a video on his Facebook page.
In the video, Mayor Bartie said that people should evacuate low lying areas because they are expecting a surge of 3-5 feet which could make roads impassable.
This could be especially problematic for those with health conditions that may require access to a hospital.
Mayor Bartie went on to recommend that those who are evacuating should try to leave by 8 p.m.
As Beryl continues its march toward the Texas coast, this is the latest precaution many Southeast Texas official's are taking in preparation for the storm.
