National Weather Service upgrades Jasper, Newton County tornado to EF-2 rating

An EF-2 rating means the winds were likely above 100 miles per hour. The rating is based on the damage meteorologists saw when they toured areas in the storm's path.

JASPER COUNTY, Texas — The National Weather Service released new information Friday about the tornado that ripped through Jasper and Newton Counties Wednesday.

The NWS upgraded the tornado to an EF-2. The rating is based on the damage meteorologists saw when they toured areas affected by the storm April 24.

An EF-2 rating means the winds were likely above 100 miles per hour.

About two dozen homes were damaged during Wednesday's storm, but most of the power that was out has now been restored to homes in the path of the storm.
