Jasper residents left reeling after being hit by EF-2 tornado

Sounds of bulldozers and cleaning crews echoed through the streets, as officials worked to clear the trail of destruction left in the tornados wake.

JASPER, Texas — It had been a grueling 36 hours for the people of Jasper.

They're dealing with devastating damage after an EF-2 Tornado tore through the area on Monday.

Sounds of bulldozers and cleaning crews echoed through the streets, as officials worked to clear the trail of destruction left in the tornados wake.

"It was kind of quiet, then we had gotten a tornado warning and then we're like, 'ah, just another one.' Then out of nowhere, there was a tornado in our backyard," said Christian Martinez.

Martinez moved fast to shelter his family and dogs from the EF-2 as it cut through County Road 297 in South Jasper.

"It was the lowest grumble you've ever heard, you could feel it in your body. It was terrifying," recalled Sierra Martinez.

the family luckily made it out without any damage to their home.

"We give all the glory and praise to our lord and savior Jesus Christ, because we know he protected us," said Sierra Martinez.

Sadly, others weren't as fortunate.

"It's unbelievable what that storm can do in eight, ten, twenty seconds," said resident Don Barnett.

Barnett was working during the storm. When he finally made it home to survey the damage, he immediately feared for his dog.

My dog was in the house. Her name's 'lucky.' how she lived through it is beyond me," said Barnett.

Janett Lewis with Faith Temple Church, has teamed up with the American Red Cross to provide food, water, and shelter to those displaced and without power.

"Our home was hit yesterday by the tornado, as well," said Lewis.

Her and her husband, Pastor Ray Lewis, say despite the damages to their home, they are grateful to help people in need.

"Our community was really hard hit, so we just want to be in support in our community," said Lewis.

The Red Cross shelter at Faith Temple Church will remain open to anyone who is displaced. The state is asking storm victims to report damage on its "ISTAT" website.
