City of Beaumont using 2 city buses to help keep homeless population warm during arctic blast

Leaders are using two city buses that have been converted into warming stations.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Keeping those living on the streets of Beaumont warm and alive, is the main goal during the arctic blast.

City leaders have come up with a creative way to keep the homeless warm by using two city buses that have been converted into warming stations.

One city bus is will transport those who don't have a home to a shelter.

The other bus is being used as a mobile warming station to get people out of the cold weather.

Each bus can hold 14 people.

Mayor Pro Tem, Randy Feldschau says that instead of taking the homeless to the shelters, he came up with the idea to take the facilities to the homeless.

"We understand there's a large homeless population here in Beaumont and, it's going to take everybody stepping in to address this issue,” said Feldschau.

He hopes all of the encampments across the city will be empty during this extreme cold.

Feldschau says this is a great example of non-profits coming together to protect some of the most vulnerable.

"That's how we get things done when non-profits and the city work together to address the challenges we're facing as a city," Feldshcau said.

The two buses will be running from Thursday, December 22, 2022 through Christmas Day for 24 hours to make sure everyone has a warm place to be.
