BEAUMONT, Texas — The Mike Smith Honda dealership in Beaumont looks a lot like a parking lot, and the parking lot at Ford Park looks a lot like a dealership.
There's a mix of new, old, and used cars in the lot. The one thing they have in common is they've all been totaled.
Mike Smith Honda General Manager Chris Jenkins said hundreds of cars were lost due to flood damage.
"You go from doing a great job to getting it all lost in a matter of 12 hours," Chris Jenkins, the general manager of Mike Smith Honda said.
Mike Smith Auto group lost about 950 cars to flood damage.
"We've been going through all of the cars, any of the deemed flooded which in all honesty is 90 percent of them, we've been moving them over to Ford Park," Jenkins said.
Now the dealership is in the process of bringing new cars in, and taking the damaged cars out. They say it's a process that'll take several weeks.
"Everyday we're getting more over there, it's just you don't have enough tow trucks or bodies on the ground to be able to move that many cars that fast," Jenkins said.
Jenkins said people who are looking to buy used cars in the area within the next several weeks should be on the lookout for several things when purchasing a car.
"I would definitely be looking for any water lines on the tire or brake calibers. If it's a car check the trunk first," Jenkins said
The dealership plans on being back up and running within the next few weeks.
"Getting everybody back to normal with their families and the business. It's a lot of work but you've got to do it," Jenkins said.
