Hurricane season is days away. Here's how you can prepare, even in the midst of COVID-19.

"I think that if there were a silver lining with COVID-19, it would be the fact that we have been in response mode now for the last several weeks."

BEAUMONT, Texas — Preparation is key when it comes to tropical storms and hurricanes in Southeast Texas.

With the beginning of hurricane season less than two weeks away, county officials are stressing that folks should start getting ready.
As Tropical Storm Arthur gets a jump start on hurricane season, there's no time like the present to get prepared.

However, getting hurricane ready while already hunkering down for COVID-19 can seem overwhelming.

Jefferson County Emergency Management Coordinator Mike White is on the front lines of both.

"I think that if there were a silver lining with COVID-19, it would be the fact that we have been in response mode now for the last several weeks, so if we were to experience a storm, there would not be an issue of ramping up communication," White said.

His team is already constantly communicating, and they're coming up with plans for social distancing in shelters if needed.

"We will face and continue facing this pandemic together. If a storm comes, we'll face it together," White said.

That means everyone needs to be prepared with an emergency kit. Use a curbside pick-up at the store, or make a list of what you need and wear a mask while you shop.

Officials also recommend taking more time to put together hurricane kits since stores may be out of some supplies.

They suggest including protective items like hand sanitizer and masks.

With more people working and learning at home, it's important to make sure your home is insured in case of a flood.

Kimberly Tamberella, owner of Insurelife Insurance Agency, knows about the damage storms can do all too well. She also know how important it is to protect your family and belongings.

"We make people who don't want flood insurance to sign a waiver that's how important it is."
Living along the Gulf Coast makes people more vulnerable to storms, but White says we're all in it together.

"We'll get through it just like we are getting through this," White said.
