Disaster declaration issued for Jefferson County ahead of Hurricane Marco, Laura

Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick issued a declaration of disaster Sunday morning.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Texas — All eyes are on the Gulf of Mexico as forecasters expect two hurricanes to be in the Gulf of Mexico at the same time. Marco and Laura are expected to impact Louisiana and Southeast Texas this week.

Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick issued a declaration of disaster Sunday, August 23 as Southeast Texas works to get ready for the wild weather that may be on the way.

This announcement comes after Port Arthur Mayor Thurman Bartie asked for a voluntary evacuation of Sabine Pass Saturday afternoon.

Branick says the county has been working tirelessly to ensure that all of their equipment is functioning and transportation options are available.

Unlike previous years, the county is looking to place folks in hotels as opposed to one central location due to the pandemic is evacuations are necessary.

Branick is encouraging everyone to have a plan in place.

"It's gonna be what's it's gonna be," Branick said. "We don't control mother nature and we're just going to have to deal with what we are confronted with. We're gonna stay on top of it and always try to get the best available information so that we can make the appropriate decision."
