Church in Orange feeds thousands following Hurricane Laura, plans to continue help for community

"We just want to continue to do what we can even on off days like this, because there's still some people that have nothing. They can't take an off day."

ORANGE, Texas — Destiny Church in Orange was already making plans to help out its community when Hurricane Laura first made landfall. Almost two weeks later, they're still giving back.

Recovery mode started just two days after Laura. Johnny Asevedo says it's been a joy to help the people of Southeast Texas.

"Actually we came up with a plan on Wednesday of what we were gonna do whenever it took place, we got out here Friday and I think at six we started serving dinner and we didn't stop," Asevedo said.

For a week straight the church fed thousands of people.

While they didn't serve food on Labor Day, other services to the community haven't stopped.

"We just want to continue to do what we can even on off days like this, because there's still some people that have nothing. They can't take an off day," Asevedo said.

Clothes, shoes, diapers and baby formula were some of the items donated that started filling up a room in the church.

"Although we've stopped setting up camp out here, we're still helping to feed families, we're still helping to get them the cleaning supplies, clothes, and things that they need," Asevedo said.

They know they'll be giving back to the community for some time.

"It is a joy to serve, it really is," Asevedo said.
