CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas — Chambers County has issued a disaster declaration as Tropical Depression Imelda moves across Southeast Texas.
The declaration, issued by Judge Jimmy Sylvia, says the county is "under imminent threat of severe damage, injury of loss of life or property".
The Chambers County Emergency Operations Center has also been activated.
Rainfall totals as of Wednesday afternoon are averaging 4 to 6 inches, according to Ryan Holzaepfel with Chambers County Emergency Management.
"Chambers County EOC was activated and began coordinating damage assessments throughout the county: roads, county buildings and overall conditions county-wide," Holzaepfel confirmed.
East Chambers ISD and Anahuac ISD canceled classes Wednesday due to flooding fears. This closure includes Lee College classes.
Chambers is one of five counties to be issued a rare 'high flood risk'. The county could see severe flash flooding, according to Texas Division of Emergency Management meteorologists.
County officials say the declaration is only a precaution at this time.
