BEAUMONT, Texas — Beaumont Police are investigating after one woman was seriously injured in a two-motorcycle accident on Friday.
It happened in the 1700 block of Fairway Street in Beaumont. Beaumont Police responded to a call around 2:20 p.m. about a motorcycle accident.
Police were told that two people were riding dirt bicycles when they collided. A 23-year-old woman was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
Beaumont Police told 12News crews at the scene that neither of the motorcycles involved in the accident were street legal. While police understand that people like to go and enjoy good weather, they said driving vehicles such as these are dangerous.
"We just want to remind people, you know, situations like this, first of all, it's not legal to ride these dirt bikes on the city streets," Beaumont Officer Carol Riley said. "There's no brake lights, no helmets, no training, just a dangerous situation."
Beaumont Police said situations such as Friday's can happen when people do not err on the side of caution.
"Think about the people that get killed just on bicycles, much less on vehicles that travel at, you know, high rate of speed with no safety equipment on them at all, pieced together," Riley said. "Anything can go wrong, and it did today."
It is unclear what charges if any those involved may face. The incident is currently under investigation.
Police are encouraging Southeast Texans to contact area authorities if they see someone riding an illegal vehicle. This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
