KIRBYVILLE, Texas — A Spurger woman has died after the pickup she was riding in hit a tree near Kirbyville on Wednesday afternoon.
Charles Kellum, 42, was driving the pickup when he went off the roadway and hit a tree according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Candice Sfamurri, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kellum was taken to St. Elizabeth in Beaumont with serious injuries.
It happened on County Road 569 in Jasper County just south of Kirbyville.

At approximately 4:30p.m, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to a single vehicle crash on CR 569 in Jasper County. The crash occurred approximately one mile south of Kirbyville.
The preliminary DPS crash investigation indicates that a 2017 Ford pickup truck was traveling northbound on CR 569. The driver was traveling at an unsafe speed and lost control. The vehicle continued off the roadway and struck a tree.
The passenger, 36-year-old Candice Sfamurri of Spurger, was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Mike Smith at the scene.
The driver, 42-year-old Charles Kellum of Kirbyville, was transported to St. Elizabeth hospital with serious injuries.
