Two die in head-on wreck along Texas 62 near Buna late Thursday night

The wreck forced the closure of the highway in both directions as DPS troopers investigated the wreck.

BUNA, Texas — Two men were killed in a fiery head-on collision late Thursday night in Jasper County.

The two men died in the wreck when a pickup and an SUV struck head-on and burst into flames, according to Jasper County Precinct Six Justice of the Peace Steve Conner.

At about 11:40 p.m. a 2013 Chevrolet Traverse SUV was headed south on Texas Highway 62 near County Road 806 when it crossed over into the northbound lanes and struck a 2017 Ford F-150 pickup that was headed north according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The wreck forced the closure of the highway in both directions as troopers investigated the wreck, according to Conner.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names will not be released until their immediate families have been notified, according to the DPS.

The Buna volunteer fire department and deputies with the Jasper County Sheriff's Office also responded to the wreck.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the wreck.
