Police identify victim of Tuesday afternoon 3-car wreck as City of Port Arthur employee

The driver of the Honda, Elton Slater, was pronounced dead at the scene.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Port Arthur police identified the person killed in a Tuesday afternoon wreck as a 57-year-old City of Port Arthur employee.

It happened in the 4000 block of Highway 73 around noon. Port Arthur Police responded to a call about a major accident.

An initial investigation revealed a Honda passenger car was travelling west on Highway 73 when a Ford passenger car struck it from behind, according to a Port Arthur Police Department release. This caused the Honda to hit a Ford Mustang.

The driver of the Honda, Elton Slater, city of Port Arthur employee, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford passenger car was taken to an area hospital but is expected to survive.

The driver of the Ford Mustang was not seriously injured. The wreck temporarily shut down the westbound lanes of Highway 73.

From a Port Arthur Police Department release:

On 02-15-22 at approximately 12pm, officers of the Port Arthur Police Department responded to the 4000 BLK of Hwy 73 in reference to a major motor vehicle accident.

Upon officer’s arrival, it was determined that a Honda passenger car was travelling west on Hwy 73 and was struck in the rear by a Ford passenger car. Due to the force of the impact, the Honda struck the rear of a third vehicle (Ford Mustang). The driver of the Honda was pronounced deceased at the scene due to injuries sustained in the accident.

The driver of the Ford passenger car was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Ford Mustang received no major injuries.

The deceased in this accident has been identified as Elton Slater, a 57-year-old City of Port Arthur employee. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Slater family.

An investigation into this three-car accident is being conducted by the Criminal Investigations Division along with the Accident Reconstruction Team of the Port Arthur Police Department.
