WINNIE, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a Sunday afternoon crash that left one person dead.
It happened around 2:30 p.m. on Interstate 10 near Brush Island Road in Winnie. An initial investigation suggests a 2021 Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling east when the driver reportedly suffered a "medical condition" that caused him to travel off the roadway, according to a DPS release.
The tractor semi-trailer became disabled and temporarily blocked eastbound traffic. The lane has since been reopened.
The driver was taken to CHRISTUS ST. Elizabeth where he was pronounced dead. The identity of the driver has not been released pending family notification.

CHAMBERS COUNTY – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a commercial motor vehicle crash on Interstate 10 just west of Brush Island Road today, December 19, 2021.
The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 2:30 p.m., a 2021 Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling east. It’s reported that the driver may have suffered a medical condition, causing him to travel off the roadway to the right and then back to the left again, causing the truck tractor semi-trailer to become disabled in the roadway, temporarily blocking eastbound traffic.
The driver was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The driver’s information is not available at this time pending notification of next of kin.
The investigation is ongoing, no additional information at this time.
