Louisiana man recovering after lumber goes through windshield during Wednesday night Newton County crash

The lumber hit the 55-year-old driver in the head.

NEWTON COUNTY, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a Wednesday night Newton County crash that left a Louisiana man injured.

It happened shortly before 6:30 p.m., on Highway 87 near County Road 2091. A preliminary investigation suggests that a 2019 Ford pickup was traveling north, and a flatbed truck hauling lumber was traveling south.

A piece of lumber reportedly fell off of the flatbed and struck the windshield of the driver side of the Ford, according to a DPS release. The lumber hit the driver of the Ford, 55-year-old Julius Hippler, in the head.

Hippler was taken to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth to be treated for his injuries.

From a Texas DPS release: 

NEWTON COUNTY – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a crash on state Highway 87, approximately two-tenths of a mile south of County Road 2091 yesterday, Dec. 22, 2021.

The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 6:21 p.m., a 2019 Ford pickup was traveling north while an unknown flatbed truck hauling lumber was traveling south. It is reported that a piece of lumber fell off the flatbed and struck the windshield of the pickup on the driver side, causing significant damage.

The driver of the pickup, identified as 55-year-old Julius Hippler of Florien, Louisiana was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

The crash remains under investigation, no additional information at this time.
