Jasper County deputy involved in wreck late Sunday night

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the wreck.

JASPER, Texas — A deputy and another driver were injured in a wreck involving a sheriff's office patrol unit late Sunday night in Jasper County.

The wreck happened at the intersection of U.S. Highway 190 and U.S. Highway 96 in Jasper according to a spokesperson from the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

A 2018 Ford pickup was driving south on US 96 and a Jasper County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle was traveling east on US 190 shortly after 10 p.m. according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A vehicle going west reportedly did not stop at a red light on US 190, according to the release.

The patrol vehicle turned around, with its emergency light on, to stop the vehicle that ran the light and was hit by the Ford pickup.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: A video previously attached to this article may have given the impression that the Ford pickup ran a red light but that is incorrect.)

The deputy was taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital to be treated for non-life threating injuries the spokesperson said.

The driver of the pickup truck was also taken to Woodland Hospital in Lufkin and later transferred to  a Tyler hospital for treatment but their condition is unknown.
