MAURICEVILLE, Texas — Texas Department of Public Safety troopers are investigating a wreck that claimed the life of a 53-year-old woman from Orange along Texas Highway 62 north of Mauriceville Monday morning.
Stephanie Gillespie, 53, of Orange, was killed in the wreck which happened near the intersection of Texas Highway 62 and County Road 3139 just inside southern Newton County according to Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Chuck Havard.
Preliminary investigation by Troopers shows that just after 7 a.m. Gillespie was driving a Ford SUV north along Texas highway 62 as a Ford pickup was headed south according to a news release from the DPS.
The pickup reportedly crossed over into the northbound lanes and struck the SUV according to the news release,
Gillespie was pronounced dead at the scene by a Newton County justice of the peace.
The 20-year-old man driving the pickup was taken by ambulance to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for treatment DPS said.
Troopers are continuing to investigate the wreck.
Firefighters from Newton County Emergency Services District Number One as well as deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene of the wreck.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers are investigating a fatal crash on state Highway 62, near the Orange County line, that occurred today, September 26, 2022.
The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 7:05 a.m., a Ford SUV was traveling north, while a Ford pickup was traveling south. It is reported that the pickup crossed over into the northbound lane and struck the SUV.
The driver of the SUV was pronounced deceased on scene by a Justice of the Peace. Their information is not immediately available pending notification of their next of kin.
The driver of the pickup, identified as 20-year-old Daniel Burge of Call, was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.
This is an ongoing investigation and there is no further information available at this time.
