GROVES, Texas — Family, friends and the Southeast Texas riding community are mourning the loss of one of their own after a Groves man was killed in a motorcycle accident.
Jeremy Squiers, 39, was riding along westbound Texas Highway 73 on Sunday, August 28, 2022. At some point, he lost control and was thrown from his motorcycle Groves Police Chief Deputy Kirk Rice told 12News.
Squiers was heavily involved in the wrecker service industry in Southeast Texas.
Family and friends described Squiers as someone who always helped others and made sure they were taken care of, whether that meant towing a car or clearing an accident scene.
Cowboy Harley Director Van Jordan said Squiers' death is hitting the Southeast Texas riding committee hard. While Jordan didn't know Squiers personally, he heard great things about him from others.
"Far as I know, he's an excellent guy. Everything I heard was nothing but top notch stuff about him. Swell guy, and I heard about his blue eyes and his beard," he said.
Jordan lost his nephew to a similar accident last year. He said losing one of their own is something you never forget and goes to highlight the dangers of riding motorcycles.
"Seventy miles an hour in a car you hit a piece of rubber or hit a pipe or something in the road, you might mess the car up, but if we hit something at 70 miles an hour our life is in the road hands basically because of the fact we could die," Jordan said.
Squiers' family tells 12News that during Harvey, he would go out and tow people's cars to safety as the floodwaters rose.
According to his friends, he would go out to help clear wrecks while also keeping the scene safe and secure.
One friend even calls Squiers quote "a pillar in our community."
"The family of Jeremy we just wish that whatever they are going through, asking God just to bless the family, comfort them in their time of need. We're here for them no matter what," Jordan said
Squiers, who police say was riding his 2016 Harley-Davison Sportster to the Waffle House on Twin City Highway, was identified by Groves Police Monday morning after his family was notified.
Squiers fell off the highway onto 39th Street and suffered severe head trauma. He was taken by ambulance to an Christus St. Elizabeth hospital in critical condition.
He was thrown about 100 feet and then fell to the street below, according to Chief Rice.
Squiers died Sunday night in the St. Elizabeth ICU according to Jefferson County Justice of the Peace Ben Collins.
Collins tells 12News he has ordered an autopsy.
