'Miracles happen everyday' : Family holding on to hope after motorcycle wreck leaves Mauriceville man seriously injured

Ian Chandler sustained a collapsed lung, shattered pelvis, a brain bleed and other internal injuries.

MAURICEVILLE, Texas — The family of a 20-year-old Mauriceville man is hoping for a miracle and asking the Southeast Texas community for help after he was seriously injured in a multi-vehicle wreck.

The crash happened Friday at the intersection of Highway 62 and FM 2802. Ian Chandler was riding a motorcycle going south on the highway and approaching the intersection, when a Nissan Altima going north failed to yield the right of way and turned in front of him.

Chandler hit the Nissan, causing the Nissan to hit a Toyota Tacoma at the intersection. Chandler's parents believe he was out running errands when the crash took place.

"We feel he was just going to Market Basket or something, probably to get a coke," Georgina Chandler, Ian Chandler’s mother, said.

The driver of the Toyota was not injured in the crash. The driver and passenger in the Nissan were taken to St. Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont.

Ian Chandler was first flown to St. Elizabeth in Beaumont. However, due to the severity of his injuries, he was later flown to Memorial Hermann in Houston.

Georgina Chandler told 12News that her son sustained a collapsed lung, shattered pelvis, a brain bleed and other internal injuries. However, he has shown some signs of improvement.

"He will open his eyes when commanded, but he won’t look at you," Georgina Chandler said.

Georgina and David Chandler lost their son, Ian Chandler’s brother, two years ago in a car wreck. They are driving three hours a day to be by Ian Chandler's side.

"I drive home at night, and I come back in the mornings,” David Chandler, Ian Chandler’s father, said.

The 20-year-old old has a long road to recovery ahead of him as doctors work to save his life.

"Saturday evening he went into the first pelvis surgery, but because the pressure in his brain started increasing again, they had to abort the surgery,” Georgina Chandler said. "He's had two life flights. He's had the aortic dissection surgery, which was you know four hours."

The parents are grateful for every bit of positive news and hope for a miracle.

"He died three times on us when he was a baby and he lived, and he fought through it." Georgina Chandler said. "He's lived his whole life like that, as just a fighter."

There are a lot of uncertainties, but Ian Chandler's family is refusing to give up.

"Miracles happen everyday' Georgina Chandler said.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help pay for medical expenses.
