16-year-old Lumberton High School student dies in wreck along Hardin County dirt road early Sunday morning

The initial investigation showed that the pickup truck was headed down the dirt and gravel road at an unsafe speed when the wreck happened.

HARDIN COUNTY, Texas — An early Sunday morning single-vehicle wreck along a dirt road claimed the life of a 16-year-old Lumberton High School student in Hardin County over the weekend.

At about 3 a.m. Sunday, November 17, 2024, a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by William Miller, 17, of Kountze, was headed north along Sap Graveyard Rd, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Miller and three passengers, two 16-year-old boys and a 15-year-old boy, were in the truck at the time of the wreck, according to the release.

Initial investigation showed that the pickup truck was headed down the dirt and gravel road at an unsafe speed when it ran into the ditch on the west side of the road, struck a tree and flipped, the release said.

One of the 16-year-old boys, who was a student at Lumberton High School, was pronounced dead at the scene by a Hardin County justice of the peace, according to the release.

The Lumberton Independent School District confirmed that the boy who died was a student there and has made counselors available to his classmates today.

The name of the 16-year-old  has not been released.

The 17-year-old driver was taken by ambulance to a Southeast Texas hospital with non-life threatening injuries while the other two teens were not injured.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the wreck.
