Louisiana woman drives into oncoming traffic causing fatal head-on collision near Orange

The fatal wreck happened shortly after 11:30 p.m.

ORANGE, Texas — Troopers are investigating after a Tuesday night wreck near Orange claimed the life of a Louisiana woman.

The fatal wreck happened shortly after 11:30 p.m. Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety were called to State Highway 62, a little more than a mile north of Orange.

An investigation suggests that a 2017 Ford passenger car was traveling south, and a 2011 Ford passenger car was traveling north. At some point, the 2017 Ford traveled into oncoming traffic and hit the 2011 Ford head-on, according to a Texas DPS release.

The driver of the 2017 Ford was pronounced dead at the scene by a Justice of the Peace. She was later identified as Stephanie Smith, 48, of Louisiana, according to the release.

The driver of the 2011 Ford was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

ORANGE COUNTY – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a fatal crash on state Highway 62, approximately one-half mile north of Orange, that occurred last night, April 12, 2022.

The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 11:35 p.m., a 2017 Ford passenger car was traveling south while a 2011 Ford passenger car was traveling north. It is reported that the 2017 Ford traveled into the oncoming lane and struck the 2011 Ford head-on.

The driver of the 2017 Ford, identified as 48-year-old Stephanie Smith of Dequincy, Louisiana, was pronounced deceased on scene by a Justice of the Peace.

The driver of the 2011 Ford, identified as 29-year-old Christina Johnson of Bridge City, was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

The investigation remains ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.
