Hwy 73 wreck near Winnie claims life of 26-year-old Dayton man after car strikes 18-wheeler

Troopers were dispatched to the wreck on Highway 73 at Wilbur Road at about 6 a.m. Friday morning.

A 26-year-old Dayton was killed Friday morning in a wreck with an 18-wheeler on Highway 73 in South Jefferson County.

Joshua Caleb Crunk, 26, of Dayton, was killed when the car he was driving struck the rear of an 18-wheeler Friday morning on Highway 73 just east of Winnie according to a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Crunk was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Ray Chesson according to the release.

At approximately 6:00a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) received a report of a multiple vehicle crash on Highway 73, near Big Hill Road, in Jefferson County.

Preliminary reports indicate that a 2008 Peterbuilt truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling eastbound on SH 73. The driver of the 18-wheeler slowed to make a right turn onto Wilbur Road when its trailer was impacted by a 2016 Chrysler passenger vehicle.

The driver of the Chrysler, a 26-year-old male from Dayton, Texas, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Ray Chesson. His identity will not be released until family members have been notified.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, Jesus Chapa, 75, of Alvin, Texas, did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

All information is preliminary as Troopers work to determine the exact factors that contributed to this fatal crash.
