Houston man dies in early Tuesday wreck along Hamshire Rd

Two passengers in the car were taken to a Winnie hospital but a third ran from the scene.

WINNIE, Texas — A 24-year-old Houston man died at the scene of a wreck in west Jefferson County early Tuesday morning.

Jorge Baltazar, 24, of Houston, was pronounced dead at the scene by a Jefferson County justice of the peace.

The wreck happened at about 12:20 a.m. Tuesday on Hamshire Road about five miles northeast of Winnie according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A 2013 Cadillac passenger car was traveling west along Hamshire Road when it went off the left side of the road and into the ditch where it struck a culvert, killing Baltazar, who was driving, according to the release.

A 48-year-old man and and a 23-year-old man, both from Houston, were taken to Riceland Medical Center in Winnie for treatment and a third unidentified passenger ran from the scene troopers said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a fatal crash on Hamshire Road, approximately five miles north-east of Winnie, that occurred this morning, April 26, 2022. 

The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 12:20 a.m., a 2013 Cadillac passenger car was traveling west. It is reported that the passenger car, for an unknown reason at this time, traveled off the road to the left and into the south ditch, where it struck a culvert. 

The driver, identified as 24-year-old Jorge Baltazar of Houston, was pronounced deceased on scene by a Justice of the Peace. 

There were three passengers, one unidentified who left the scene prior to officers arriving, the others are identified as a 48-year-old and a 23-year-old Houston man, were transported to Richland Medical Center for treatment.

 The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.
