JEFFERSON COUNTY, Texas — A Hamshire man was killed Friday morning after his pickup truck struck the rear of a dump truck along Texas 73.
Ricky Jake Stone, 39, of Hamshire, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck near Taylor’s Bayou according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The wreck was reported at about 10 a.m. Friday morning and caused the eastbound lanes to be closed for nearly three hours.
A commercial dump truck was headed eastbound on Texas 73 when it slowed to make a left turn using a crossover in the median according to troopers.
Stone, who was following behind the dump truck in a 2008 Chevrolet pickup truck, struck the rear of the dump truck according to the release.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct Eight Justice of the Peace Tom Gillam the release said.
The driver of the dumpt ruck, a 51-year-old man from Orange, was taken by ambulance to a Southeast Texas hospital with serious injuries the release said.

At approximately 10:00a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) received a report of a multiple vehicle crash on SH 73 in Jefferson County. The crash occurred near Taylor’s Bayou and involved a commercial motor vehicle.
The initial DPS crash investigation indicates that a dump truck was traveling eastbound on SH 73, in the inside traffic lane, followed by a 2008 Chevrolet pickup truck. The driver of the dump truck slowed to make a left turn into the crossover when his vehicle was rear-ended by the Chevrolet pickup truck. Both vehicles traveled a short distance before coming to rest.
The driver of the Chevrolet, 39-year-old Ricky Stone of Hamshire, was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Tom Gillam at the crash scene.
The driver of the dump truck, 51-year-old man from Orange, was transported by ambulance to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas with serious injuries.
All eastbound traffic lanes of SH 73 were closed for approximately three (3) hours, but have since reopened.
All information is preliminary as Troopers continue to investigate this fatal crash. There are no additional details available at this time.
