ORANGE COUNTY, Texas — Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating after multiple crashes involving 10 vehicles backed up traffic on Interstate 10.
The crashes happened on Interstate 10 westbound, near the Simmons exit, in Orange County on Monday.
The first crash happened around 4:30 p.m. Troopers believe a 2021 Ford SUV, 2020 Dodge SUV and 2017 Nissan SUV were traveling west.
The Ford and Dodge stopped, but the driver of the Nissan could not control their speed due to weather and hit the back of the Ford, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety release. This caused the Ford to hit the Dodge.
The driver of the Nissan was cited for failing to control their speed. No injuries were reported.
The second crash took place when a 2015 Jeep SUV and 2019 Nissan SUV slowed down due to the first crash. The driver of a 2013 Ford passenger car did not control their speed and hit the Jeep, according to the release.
This caused the Jeep to hit the Nissan.
The driver of the Ford was cited for failing to control their speed and driving without a license. It is unknown if anyone was injured.
The third crash took place when a 2005 Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling in the outside lane and an unknown vehicle was traveling in the inside lane. Troopers believe the unknown vehicle cut in front of the Freightliner.
The driver of the Freightliner tried to avoid the vehicle, hit the inside barrier and jack knifed. This blocked both lanes of travel.
It is unknown if anyone was injured.
The fourth crash took place when a 2018 Volvo truck tractor semi-trailer stopped in the outside lane due to the third crash. The driver of a 2015 Chrysler passenger car did not control their speed and hit the back of the Volvo, according to the release.
The driver of the Chrysler was cited for failing to control their speed and driving without a license. It is unknown if anyone was injured.

ORANGE COUNTY – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a non-injury multi-vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 10 west, just west of Simmons Exit, that occurred today, August 8, 2022
The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 4:30 p.m., a 2021 Ford SUV was traveling west, followed by a 2020 Dodge SUV and a 2017 Nissan SUV. It is reported that the Nissan SUV failed to control its speed, when the 2021 Ford SUV and 2020 Dodge SUV stopped due to inclement weather. The Nissan struck the rear of the Ford, which caused a chain reaction and struck the Dodge.
The driver of the Nissan was cited for failing to control his speed.
A secondary crash occurred when a 2015 Jeep SUV and a 2019 Nissan SUV was slowed due to the previous crash. It is reported that a 2013 Ford passenger car failed to control its speed and struck the 2015 Jeep SUV, which caused a chain reaction and struck the 2019 Nissan SUV.
The driver of the Ford passenger car was cited for fail to control speed and no driver license. There was one passenger.
The third crash occurred when a 2005 Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling in the outside and an unknown vehicle was traveling in the inside lane. It is reported that the unknown vehicle cut in front of the truck tractor semi-trailer, causing it to take evasive action to left. The truck tractor struck the inside barrier and jack knifed, which blocked both lanes of travel.
The fourth crash occurred when a 2018 Volvo truck tractor semi-trailer was stopped in the outside lane due to the previous crash. It is reported that a 2015 Chrysler passenger car failed to control its speed and struck the rear of the semi-trailer.
The driver of the Chrysler was cited for fail to control speed and no driver license. There were four other passengers involved.
