Passersby pull driver from pickup after fiery wreck along Highway 62 south of Buna Wednesday morning

Two passersby pulled the driver out of the burning pickup.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Texas Department of Public Safety troopers are investigating a fiery wreck Wednesday morning along Texas Highway 62 near County Road 784 about three miles south of Buna in Jasper County.

A man was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck north along Texas Highway 62 as he headed home to Call after working his first night shift at a Port Arthur plant when he fell asleep crossed into the southbound lane according to a news release from DPS.

The pickup then struck a southbound electric utility truck that was towing a trailer loaded with wooden power poles and caught fire the release said.

Following the impact the pickup spun around before stopping in the northbound lane while the utility truck and trailer left the roadway and ended up in a ditch.

Two passersby pulled the driver of the burning pickup out and to safety according to Deputy Karli Cherry of the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

The pickup driver was flown by helicopter to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.

No one else was injured in the wreck, which happened at about 7:45 a.m.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the wreck.
