Driver dies after being thrown from moped, hit by Ford SUV on Interstate 10 in Chambers County

The name of the victim is not being released pending family notification.

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas — Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating after a Monday morning wreck left one person dead.

It happened on Interstate 10 near mile marker 823. Troopers believe that a Vespa moped was traveling west shortly before 6 a.m., when a 2019 Dodge pickup hit it from behind. 

The rider was thrown from the moped and then hit by a 2008 Ford SUV driving westbound, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety release.

The driver of the moped was pronounced deceased at the scene. The name of the victim is not being released pending family notification.

No one in the Dodge or Ford was injured during the crash.

CHAMBERS COUNTY – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers are investigating a fatal crash investigation on Interstate Highway 10, near the 823-mile marker, that occurred today, Feb. 27, 2023. 

The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 5:49 a.m., a Vespa moped was traveling west. It is reported that a 2019 Dodge pickup struck the moped from behind, throwing the rider from the moped. The rider was then struck by a westbound 2008 Ford SUV.

The driver of the moped was pronounced deceased on the scene. Their information is not immediately available pending notification of their next of kin.

The driver of the pickup and one passenger were uninjured during the crash. 

The driver of the SUV was not injured. 

This is an ongoing investigation, and no further information is available at this time.
