Local angler brings in record fish on the Sabine River

The best fish that would ever be caught out of the Sabine River would get wrangled in on just Duff's third cast.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Records are meant to be broken.

On any normal day, Lance Duff would have his gear ready as he typically would film his fishing expeditions while on the water.

However, this time the best fish that would ever be caught out of the Sabine River would get wrangled in on just Duff's third cast.

Once the bass was brought into the weighing station, Duff told the judges present, "I think I got the potential record bass for the Sabine River."

Before Duff's fish was placed on scale, the official record was 6.81 lbs.

Right as the official weighing was about to take place, the announcement was made that a "big one" was on its way to the podium.

Once the fish read as 6.92 lbs. the celebration was on.

"We [Duff and his partner] just always catch them out here, it's a place where we come to a lot," Duff said about the Sabine River.

His dad was the first one to bring to his attention the potential for the record being broken.

Even after his dad relaying the message of what the record was at that time, Duff was still in disbelief.

"I had to check for myself, I got on Parks and Wildlife's website and looked it up and said we got a shot!" said Duff.

Arguably, the best part about fishing is the gift of giving back.

After the official weighing of the fish, Lance released it back into the river.

"Hopefully some young angler will be out there and be fishing, and then that big ole' bite hit their lure and they'll be the new record holder," said Duff.

Congrats to Lance Duff!
