WASHINGTON — The Paris Olympics are continuing strong headed into Day 5 after strong performances from Team USA on Tuesday paved the way for more chances to earn gold on Wednesday.
Here's some of the key events coming up on Wednesday, July 31:
Gymnastics
After helping Team USA win bronze in the men's team gymnastics final, Paul Juda and Fred Richards will represent the U.S. in the individual all-around final.
The men's all-around comes a day after the U.S. women's team, led by Simone Biles, took gold in a commanding performance.
Swimming
Five sets of gold medals are on the line for Team USA in the pool Wednesday, including at least one where the U.S. is a clear favorite.
Katie Ledecky is expected to continue her dominance in the 1,500-meter freestyle after nearly lapping her opponents in the qualifying heat Tuesday. Ledecky already had 19 of the top 20 fastest times in the world for that race, and Monday she secured the 20th spot.
She enters Wednesday’s race just one Summer Games medal away from matching the women's swimming all-time record.
Alongside the distance swimming competition, both the men's and women's 100-meter freestyle finals will give Team USA more chances to make the podium.
Basketball
The U.S. men's basketball team is facing South Sudan, whom they beat by just one point in a pre-Games warmup match. The U.S. team, which is stacked with NBA greats such as Steph Curry and LeBron James, won their opening game against Serbia by more than 20 points.
The team is likely to medal and a strong contender for gold as the tournament continues.
Soccer
The U.S. women's national team has the opportunity to go 3-0 in the group stage. The team's final matchup is against Australia, after beating Germany and Zambia by three goals each in the last two matches.
