Lamar softball drops pair at Houston Invitational

Lady Cards drop to (0-3) on the year following losses to Nebraska and Houston

HOUSTON — Lamar’s softball team had their first doubleheader of the season as they took on the University of Nebraska and the University of Houston. But while they were able to scratch out a few hits, they were held to just one run in the doubleheader combined.

In their first game of the day, LU was held without a run although they would get their first base hit of the season in the fifth inning as Audry Fleming recorded a two-out single. But LU conceded eight runs in a five-inning loss as five errors plagued the Cardinals against the Cornhuskers. Karyana Mitchell would be tabbed with the loss going four innings allowing seven runs on five hits with three earned while two strikeouts. Cameron Niedenthal recorded one out, but surrendered the walkout hit to Nebraska in the fifth inning.

In game two, a 9-1 loss to UH, the Cardinals would not score until the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Kalyn Xayaseng. Kaylee Ancelot, Felixia Hinojosa, and Aleka Xayaseng each recorded a hit. Aaliyah Ruiz (2.0 IP, eight hits, five runs, one strikeout) and Niedenthal (2.0 IP, five hits, four runs) pitched for LU with Ruiz taking the loss.

The Cardinals will battle with Virginia (10:00 a.m.) and Nebraska (12:30 p.m.) tomorrow to conclude the Houston Invitational.
