BEAUMONT, Texas — Lamar University's Kenson Tate returned to Oregon over the weekend for a chance at making the U.S. Olympic track and field team but came up short.
Tate, a redshirt sophomore at Lamar University who is from Zachary, La., placed 22nd overall in the men's long jump at the U.S. Olympic trials according to Lamar University.
He had three jumps to make the team Saturday evening in Eugene, Oregon.
Tate fouled on his first jump and posted hs best jump on his second time at 7.48 meters, or 24 feet 6.6 inches. Trying for a longer jump on his third try he was unable to best his second jump and posted 7.25 meters, or 23 feet, 9.5 inches, according to Lamar.
He has now concluded his season which included him earning two All-American honors, two Southland Conference long jump titles as well as a spot in both the indoor and outdoor national championships.
Tate broke the Lamar record with a jump of 8.02 meters, or 26 feet, 3.75 inches.
The Southland Conference Men's Athlete of the year is set to return to Lamar University for the 2025 season.
On Thursday at 8:49 p.m. CT, Lamar's Chloe Rodriguez will compete in the women's 400m hurdles for her Olympic chance.
